Amber vs clear blue light glasses is the choice the whole category quietly hopes you never think about, because it decides everything. Both are sold under the same name, at similar prices, with similar promises. Only one of them can protect your sleep.
The case for clear lenses
Clear blue light glasses have real, narrow virtues. They cut glare, they are socially invisible, and they trim a slice of blue output, typically 10 to 25 percent. For daytime screen comfort, that is a defensible product, honestly described.
The problem starts when the box mentions sleep. You cannot meaningfully move a dose-dependent biological response by removing a fifth of the input, and the input is large: the measured melatonin numbers show ordinary room light delaying melatonin onset in 99 percent of tested adults. Against that dose, a 20 percent trim is a rounding error.
The other claim on the box does not survive contact with the literature either: a Cochrane review pooling 17 randomised trials found blue-light filtering lenses probably make no difference to eye strain from screens. Tired eyes come from reduced blinking and fixed focal distance, not from wavelength.
The case for amber
Amber lenses exist because of physics: cutting nearly everything below 500 nm, the band the body clock reads, is impossible without a visible tint. And when trials use lenses that genuinely block, results appear.
In a randomised crossover trial on people with insomnia symptoms, amber lenses worn two hours before bed for a week produced roughly 30 extra minutes of sleep per night (Shechter and colleagues, 2018). Read the design twice: the comparison arm, the placebo, was a pair of clear lenses. One trial, both sides of this article's title, and only one side moved the outcome.
Outside consumer sleep, amber is the working tool wherever blocking evening blue is taken seriously: circadian laboratories use it to hold participants in virtual darkness, and hospital psychiatry has trialled it against grey placebo lenses with marked improvement within three days (Henriksen and colleagues, 2016).
The verdict, by use case
- Daytime screens, glare, comfort: clear. Honest product, modest job.
- Evening, sleep, melatonin: amber, worn the last two hours before bed. This is the only configuration with trial results behind it.
- One pair for both: does not exist. The physics of blocking below 500 nm forbids a clear lens from doing the evening job. Anyone selling one lens for both jobs is selling the day lens twice.
The buyer's checklist
- Ask for a transmission spectrum, the curve showing what passes at each wavelength. No curve, no confidence. A percentage on a banner is marketing, not optics.
- Check where the blocking sits. Near-total below 500 nm for evening use. A gentle roll-off starting at 415 nm is a day lens in costume.
- Check the fit. Light entering around the frame bypasses the lens. Wide temples and a closer fit beat an open fashion frame.
- Then test the only number that matters: your time to fall asleep, tracked over seven nights. Software tints will not move it much, as the Night Shift data shows in our breakdown of night mode. A real amber lens should.
