Can a Regular Red Light Bulb Work as Red Light Therapy?

It is the most reasonable objection in the category: a red bulb costs five euros, a therapy panel costs hundreds, and they glow the same colour. So can a regular red light bulb work as red light therapy?

No, and the reason is worth understanding, because the same reason explains how to judge any device before buying it. Colour is what your eye sees. Therapy is a matter of two numbers your eye cannot see at all.

Same colour, different instrument

A red-painted or red-filtered bulb produces broad, scattered light that merely looks red: the coating removes the other colours from what you see, it does not concentrate energy at any particular wavelength. The trials that produced the measurable results on skin and muscle used something else entirely: narrow-band LEDs emitting at specific points of the spectrum, most often 633 to 660 nm in red and 830 to 850 nm in near infrared, matched to the absorption of cytochrome c oxidase, the mitochondrial enzyme that turns the light into usable cellular energy.

The comparison is a candle versus a laser pointer. Both make light. Only one puts its energy where you point it.

The two numbers that make it therapy

Wavelength. The biological response is wavelength-specific. Move away from the absorption peaks and the effect fades, which is why serious devices print their wavelengths on the box and their spectrum in the manual. A bulb sold as "red" prints neither, because it has neither.

Irradiance. Even the right wavelength does nothing without enough of it arriving at your skin. Therapy devices specify their power density, in milliwatts per square centimetre at a stated distance, and the published protocols delivered measured doses in the range of a few joules per square centimetre per session. A decorative bulb delivers a small fraction of that in the relevant band, scattered across the whole room. You could sit in front of it all evening and never reach the dose a panel delivers in ten minutes.

And half of the therapeutic pair is invisible anyway: 850 nm near infrared, the part that reaches deeper tissue, produces no visible glow at all. A device could look dim and deliver it perfectly, or glow bright red and deliver none. Your eyes are the wrong instrument for this purchase.

When a plain red bulb is exactly right

None of this makes the five-euro bulb useless. It just makes it a lighting product, not a therapy product, and as lighting it has a genuinely good use: evening ambience. How to read a spec sheet before buying

  1. Stated wavelengths, not "red light". You want the actual numbers, typically 660 and 850 nm.
  2. Irradiance at a stated distance. A power figure without a distance is marketing.
  3. A published spectrum, showing the energy concentrated at the stated peaks.
  4. Photobiological safety certification, such as EN 62471.
